The Dust Bowl & the FSA

Primary sources are not limited to written material, they may also include visual sources. For this assignment in order to understand what is happening in the agricultural sector during the Great Depression we will be examining and evaluating photographs that document the Dust Bowl migration and the work of the New Deal's Resettlement Administration, later renamed the Farm Security Administration (FSA). Like other New Deal programs, the FSA brought federal intervention into the agricultural crisis of the Great Depression. The "Voices of the Dust Bowl" at the Library of Congress http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/afctshtml/tshome.html (this is same site I asked you look at last week) provides us with visual primary sources for this essay.

For this assignment reread pages 423, 446, and 476 in your textbook. These pages discuss the Resettlement Administration and the Farm Security Administration. Then click on http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/afctshtml/tshome.html and read the section "The Migrant Experience." This is located under "Understanding the Collection." Both of these readings provide background for your essay. Also look at the photographs from the "Voices of the Dust Bowl" collection. Then click http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/fsahtml/fatopint.html and look at the "15 Popular Requests from the FSA-OWI Collection" Based upon your background reading and this documentary evidence organize an outline, a thesis, and then write a 3-page essay that addresses the following questions: Remember that the primary focus of the essay should be the photographs and what they tell us about the Dust Bowl and the work of the FSA.

1) Based upon the photographic evidence how would you describe the Dust Bowlers?

2) What were the central problems faced by the Okies?

3) In what ways did the FSA try to address these problems?

4) In what ways was the FSA successful? In what ways did it fail?

The footnotes and Works Cited must be done with Chicago Style format. For this assignment you will need to footnote the specific photos that you use as evidence to support your thesis. For most Web sites, include an author if a site has one, the title of the site, the sponsor, the date of publication or modified date (date of most recent changes), and the site’s URL. Do not italicize a Web site title unless the site is an online book or periodical. Use quotation marks for the titles of sections or pages in a Web site. If a site does not have a date of publication or modified date, give the date you accessed the site (“accessed January 3, 2010”).
